The 5 Unspoken Rules of Unofficial Relationships

This stage can always be a little rocky and a little familiar. The “unofficial relationship” is when two people are really into each other and aren’t really interested in dating other people, but they haven’t established that it’s an exclusive relationship. Often times, these relationships can end quickly because the unspoken rules have been broken. Here are 5 unspoken rules every relationship should follow if they want to make it to the next level:

Rule #1: No Dating Or Sleeping With Other People

This should go for any relationship, but once the two of you have gone on multiple dates and you feel like you’re both genuinely interested in each other, no sleeping or dating other people, unless you’ve established with your partner that this is okay. However, even then, make sure that they’re okay with it and that you’re okay with it because if you start the behavior that it’s okay to date other people, then you shouldn’t be surprised if your partner starts doing the same thing.

Rule #2: It’s Not Official Until It’s Facebook Official

Facebook relationship status changes are really more of a formality and a way to seal the deal. So until you change your Facebook status to reflect your current relationship status, don’t post any cutesy pictures of the two of you or any lovey-dovey statuses or updates on any social media platform. Your partner may not be ready to flaunt the relationship yet!

Rule #3: Keep Communication Consistent

Communication is key at any relationship stage, but it is especially important in the “unofficial” phase because one slight miscommunication and you may be saying goodbye to your once-blooming relationship. Some people find themselves confused and unsure of how to communicate with their partner once at the unofficial stage, but don’t worry. Chances are they’re feeling the same way too. One, or both of you just needs to open up about your feelings. Always remain open and honest about how your relationship is going and this may lead to the conversation that makes your relationship exclusive.

Rule #4: Never Refer To Them As “A Friend”

It’s a slap to the face if you introduce or refer to your unofficial partner as a “friend” to anyone. It’ll send mixed signals and might give your partner the idea that you’re no longer interested in them in a “relationship way” and may give up on you. That and they might pick a bone with you about it too. Nobody wants to have that kind of conversation. However, there are situations where the two of you might run into someone unexpectedly and since there is no “official” label yet, just be honest when introducing your partner to someone else.

Example:

“Hey! This is <insert partner’s name here>…we’ve been dating for a while now.”

Easy as that and there is really no need for labels. Most people will get the hint with the sentence and will hopefully not pry anymore!

Rule #5: Stop Playing Mind Games

This should apply for any situation really. If you’re still playing mind games at this point in the relationship, stop and ask yourself why this is necessary. Are the two of you having communication problems? Or perhaps you both are still too immature to pursue a healthy long-term relationship. Save the mind games when figuring your next fan theory for a TV show; relationships are real life and have no time for your mind games.
